This report has been prepared by Environmental Accounting Services on behalf of HSC. The report summarises the results of individual farm assessments of emissions and sequestration potential within the Hakataramea catchment. The work was completed as an action output from the integrated catchment plan.
Key findings of the report were presented by Dr Felicity Thomas at the Shade, Shelter, Sequestration, and Securing Economic Gains field day at Strathmea Downs on 24 March 2024. The field day explored options for planting natives and/or other species to complement farming in the Hakataramea Valley. The potential for economic gains, biodiversity enhancement, carbon sequestration, improved animal welfare, and farm resilience were discussed with the support of experts on the day.
Alongside Felicity, we were grateful to have Luke Liddle from Wildlands Consultants to talk to the Landform-Based Planting Guide they developed, Allan Laurie from Laurie Forestry Ltd providing his expertise on establishing exotic tree species, and Nicole Phillips advising on consent requirements and community and catchment considerations.
